Which Johns Manville Models This Applies To

We work with Johns Manville’s RB-481, RB-483, and the commercial-grade RB-485 rolls, plus the pre-cut attic stapled panels sold through their distribution network. The RB-481 is the 25-inch wide residential roll, perforated for attic moisture escape. The RB-483 runs 48 inches and is what you’ll find in most Lancaster tract homes built 2005 to 2018. The RB-485 is thicker, with a reinforced scrim, and we see it in custom builds around the AV Country Club area.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Johns Manville changed their roll labeling in 2019. Pre-2019 rolls carry a JM logo with a red diamond. Post-2019, the diamond went blue and the emissivity rating, printed in the corner, dropped from 0.05 to 0.03. If you’re matching existing material, mixing those two emissivity ratings creates a thermal break pattern that shows up on infrared. We check this before we quote. The OEM part is the JM roll itself. Aftermarket equivalents exist, Reflectix being the most common, but their emissivity runs 0.04 to 0.05, not the 0.03 of current JM stock. For warranty purposes, some Lancaster homebuilders require the JM-branded product. We carry both on the truck and will show you the label before we staple.

Signs Your Johns Manville Radiant Barrier Installation Is Failing

• Hot ceiling patches in afternoon sun. The radiant barrier has torn or pulled staple, usually near the ridge vent where summer heat peaks first. We find this in west-facing Lancaster attic sections where the original installer skimped on fasteners.

What you can safely check: look at your attic hatch for the JM label color, note any visible tears or sagging, and photograph your electrical panel location relative to the attic space. That’s useful information for us and costs you nothing.
